Let's take a look at the Preferences of Creatext. A few of the preferences assume you have some knowledge of HTML and will know how to set the preferences to suit your needs. If you need help learning about HTML, there are many excellent sources of information on the web, such as: webmonkey, davesite and myrival, or you can search for others here.
1. Preferences In the Preferences, found under the Creatext Menu, there are seven categories you can set to suit your own working needs, or you can use the default settings.
Under START, you can choose what will happen when opening a new document. There are four choices:
- Create Blank Document
- Create New Document
- Open File
- Nothing
Under EDITOR, you can choose how your new document will look and function. There are five choices:
- Select the font and the font size you prefer to use for typing your documents
- Set the tab space you prefer, in pixels
- Select if you will use HTML or XHML
- In Options, select to have, or not have, the following options: Change special characters when typing, Show current character, Auto indent, and Horizontal Scrollbar. (If you select to have a Horizontal Scrollbar, your html will run in a straight line until the end of a line is reached. If you deselect Horizonal Scrollbar, your typing will auto-wrap to fit within your typed page.)
- In Default Tag Case, select <UPPERCASE> or <lowercase> as the default for your HTML tags.
Under NEW DOCUMENT,
- Select the window size of your working document, in pixels. (Use the default settings, a custom setting, or choose the minimum settings.
- Select the HTML to be auto-entered in your new documents: You may select STRICT, FRAME, TRANSITIONAL, or NONE
Under TAGS,
- Select the colors for your HTML Tags, Parameters, Attributes, Doc Type and Comments
- Select when the tags should be colored; when opening files, or when tags are entered
- Select whether you want end tags auto-completed or not. If you select auto-complete end tags, when you type <FONT> you will get, <FONT></FONT>
Under FILES,
- Choose opened files' creator; Use Original Creator, Also when Saving As, Use Creatext Creator
- Choose text encoding for working with Windows files
- Choose opened files' format; Keep Original, Change to Macintosh, Change to Win, Change to Unix
Under META TAG DEFAULTS,

Under DRAG and DROP,
- Choose whether to bring Creatext to the foreground when dropping an item
- With multiple files, choose; Do nothing, Separate using <BR>, or Separate using <p>
Don't worry about making a mistake. There's a Reset to Defaults Button in Preferences.
2. Contextural Menu
|
Here's a feature I really like. The Contextural Menu in Creatext. Most Macintosh users are familiar with holding down the Conrtol key and clicking the mouse to bring up a contextural menu. Well, there's a handy one in Creatext, too.
The Help item is grayed out because of the way Help is accessed in Mac OSX. Marius Soutier is working on this and the feature will be available in a future release of Creatext. In the meantime, to access Help, open the help file in the Creatext application folder.
Most items in the menu are self-explanatory. The last eight items in the list have been real time savers for me! You can add a non-breaking space without having to type it. Opening < and closing tags > are useful for writing HTML that will show in a browser as the actual symbols. This feature has been a big help in making this tutorial!
As you can see, there are other special symbols that would normally require typing several letters into your document, but are available in the Contextural Menu for quick and easy access. I'm for anything that makes the job quicker and easier!
