yellow_up.jpg Section 7: Insert Menu continued

There are a lot of very useful features to be found in the Basic section of the Insert Menu.

Comment

Click on Comment and CreaText will insert a place for you to make comments within your HTML document. The comment tag looks like this, <!-- --> When you type your comments between the dashed lines, they will show in red and wont show on your web page. It's a good way to keep notes with your document such as, <!-- Page last updated 11/01/2003 -->

Link

Click on Link and a link will be inserted into your document, like this: <A href="http://www..com"></A> Place your insertion point between www. and .com and type the URL of the item you want to link to. Then, to make the link active, put a descriptive word where I have the words, My Website. <A href="http://www.fredtaylorart.com">My Website</A>

Then all that will show on the web page is the "clickable" link, like this:  My Website

Link

Click on the second Link on the menu and an Insert Link dialog box will appear.

There is a space to type in the URL of the item you are linking to. As you can see, there are also spaces for Value and Target and a button to Select a File from your hard drive. Under Target there are these choices: _blank, _parent, _self, and _top. ( It would take a lot of space to explain what all four of these choices mean. If you know HTML, you'll know. If you don't, you probably won't use them anyway. )

Email Link

Click on Email and an Insert Email Link dialog box will appear.

This is an easy way to make an Email Link. Just type in the recipient's Email Address. If you want, you can also fill in a Subject Line and even an Email Message. This is handy if you want someone who visits your website to send you an email on a particular subject. When that person clicks on your email link, it will launch their email program and present them with a new email message already addressed to you, with a subject line in place, and a pre-formatted message to you, if you like. Pretty neat feature!

Create Link from File

Click on Create link from file... and that will cause the Open dialog box to appear and you can select a file to link to from your hard drive.

Line Break

This is fairly straightforward. It inserts a Line Break into your HTML document. Like this: <BR>

Insert Line Separator

line_separator.jpg
This is where you can insert a Line Separator into your HTML document. Like this:

Or, it can be non-shadowed and colored, like this:
As you can see from the dialog box above, there are many options to choose from for the Separator Line. Width in either pixels or percentage, Size, Alignment, Color and with a shadow or not. ( I thought green might be a nice change of pace for this line. )
Click to Insert a Paragraph

insert_paragraph.jpg

This will insert the HTML tags for a Paragraph. You can set the Alignment of the paragraph to: None, Left, Center, Right, or Justify, as shown above.

Click to Insert a Marquee

Here you can set the parameters for a Marquee that scrolls type across the screen. ( NOTE: This effect doesn't work with Netscape, The Apple Help Viewer, Safari or Opera. If you are using one of those browsers, you won't see the effect, below. )

This is my marquee! ...Wheeeee!               Please don't over do this!

Click on Non Breaking Space

to add an extra space between words, graphics, etc. This is a non breaking space: nbsp.jpg It adds extra space but doesn't show in your browser.

The next parts of the Insert Menu we will cover are the Form, Media, Text Style, and Extras. Let's move on to the next page and start there. Click the More... Button at the bottom of this page.
